Loose motions are also known as diarrhoea. Although, loose motions is not a serious issue as it gets resolved automatically after 1 to 3 days. But, it irritates the most when striking at the worst time. It also makes you limited to your home, as its bloating can start anywhere, anytime. Let’s know more about this condition.

What is Loose motion or Diarrhoea?

Loose motion is a common health condition, in which one’s stool becomes loose and watery. When one excretes 3 or more times in a day, with watery stool having a pungent smell, accompanied by bloating, stomach pain or cramps; then it is called loose motion or diarrhoea. Diarrhoea can be caused by bacteria, parasites and virus. Although, most of the time, diarrhoea gets to normal without intervention. But if it lasts long; it can cause some health problems including dehydration. As diarrhoea or loose motion is also a symptom of Appendicitis and lactose intolerance.

Types of Diarrhoea:

  • Acute Diarrhoea: It gets resolved automatically, that’s why any type of intervention is not needed in this condition. It lasts for one to three days.
  • Persistent Diarrhoea: It remains persistent for few weeks, I.e. 2-4 weeks.
  • Chronic Diarrhoea: Diarrhoea lasts for more than four weeks or hits again and again over a period of time is known as Chronic Diarrhoea.

Causes of Loose Motion:

  1. Diarrhoea persists for few days is may refer as “Intestinal flu”, caused by the virus of the bowel, viral gastroenteritis.
  2. Infections caused by microorganisms or bacteria.
  3. Unhealthy food ( which lead to upset stomach)
  4. Celiac Disease
  5. Lactose Intolerance
  6. Malabsorption
  7. Radiation therapy
  8. Side effects of Medications
  9. Parasitic infection
  10. Due to the consumption of contaminated water and food products.
  11. Food allergies
  12. Irritable bowel syndrome
  13. Ulcerative colitis
  14. Bacterial overgrowth in the small intestine.
  15. Sensitivity towards artificial sweeteners can also lead to diarrhoea if consumed.
  16. Recent antibiotics use
  17. Food poisoning

Symptoms of Loose Motion:

    1. Passing loose and watery stools
    2. Abdominal pain
    3. Abdominal cramp
    4. Nausea
    5. Loss of control of bowel movements
    6. Dizziness
    7. Lightheadedness
    8. Bloody stools
    9. Fever
    10. Vomiting
    11. Bloating

Symptoms of severe Diarrhoea:

  1. Dehydration
  2. Vomiting
  3. Blood
  4. Fever
  5. Severe pain
  6. Weight loss

Consult your doctor immediately if you have diarrhoea with symptoms like:

  • Black coloured stool
  • Having pus or blood in stool
  • Consistent greasy or oily bowel movements
  • Very foul or pungent smelling bowel movements
  • Severe abdominal or rectum pain
  • Feeling exceptionally dehydrated or weak.
  • If you have a fever of 102 F or higher.

Here, are some remedies you can try only if you don’t have any kind of severe symptoms;

Remedies for Loose Motions or Diarrhoea:

  1. Hydration:- Keeping yourself hydrated is a MUST. Increase your water intake as much as possible. But don’t take alcohol, milk, soda, tea, coffee, etc. As it can make your condition even worse. Water is the best thing to drink for hydration.

For babies, breastfeeding is a must, and it can also keep your babies hydrated. Some hydration solutions like ORS etc. Can be given, depending on the age of the infant.

  1. BRAT: If you have loose motions and you really want to fix it as soon as possible, then don’t waste time and stick to this BRAT diet as soon as possible. It not only ensures all the required elements in your body but also will soothe your abdomen and provide you with strength. Well, if you don’t know, let me tell you about BRAT. Here, BRAT means Banana, Rice ( white), Applesauce, Toast ( white).

Yes, as you are suffering from diarrhoea, you have to cut off the spicy and oily food. This BRAT is a complete meal for you, till diarrhoea persist.

Apart from it, one can also have oatmeal, baked potatoes without peel, clear broth, and chicken soup.

Foods to avoid in Loose motions:

We should avoid following foods in loose motions:-

  • Alcohol
  • Ice Cream
  • Coffee
  • Tea
  • Soft drinks
  • Chewing gum and other artificial sweeteners
  • Beans, berries, broccoli, cabbage
  • Milk
  • Peas, chickpeas, prunes
  1. Antibiotics: If the cause of your diarrhoea is some kind of infection due to bacteria or parasites, then you can go with antibiotics. Antibiotics will not work if diarrhoea caused is because of the virus.
  2. Probiotics: Including probiotic foods in your diet is one of the easiest ways to get rid of loose motions. You can have yoghurt or other natural probiotics. Probiotics in form of pills are also available nowadays.
  3. Rice water: You can do this on your own, and it will surely help. All you need to do is, just boil 1 cup of rice with 2 cups of water for about 10 minutes, or until the water becomes cloudy. Now, strain the rice and consume the remaining water.
  4. Antidiarrheal medication: If your diarrhoea is acute type, it would be better if you don’t take any type of education, as it will get over within 24 hours. But in case of any emergency or if you are suffering from persistent diarrhoea; then you can go with anti-diarrheal medications. Only one dose is enough to see the results, or even sometimes it completely cures the diarrhoea.

But if you have any kind of severe symptoms, go to your doctor immediately.

Prevention Tips for loose motions:

  • Stick to good hygiene habits, like washing hands frequently, intake of hygienic food only etc.
  • If your infant is suffering from loose motions and he/she is 0 to 12 months old, then the cause of diarrhoea may be rotavirus. In this case, you must get your child to vaccinate with the Rotavirus vaccine.
  • Keeping your utensils clean and consuming only fresh food.
  • Disinfect your surrounding frequently.
  • Don’t share your stuff with others.
  • Consume only fully cooked food products.
  • Don’t consume beverages at extreme temperatures.
  • Avoid caffeine and alcohol
  • Eat-in small chunks.
  • Avoid fried foods
  • Avoid those food products, beverages, fruits and vegetables which can cause gas.
  • Don’t forget to wash your hands for about 20 seconds.
